Looking for a fun yet relaxing place to take a vacation in July... Mid twenties couple looking for a extended weekend getaway that offers relaxing days by the beach or lake and fun nightlife while getting the true Maine experience. Dose anyone have a destination suggestion. Cape Cod maybe? I have never been to Maine and am choosing it for the cooler weather in July. Hopefully looking to go to a fair maybe do some water activities in the day and have some good music and beers at night...Does anyone know of a place that would be perfect for us? All advice is much appreciated!

I think that you would like Portland, ME, whether you stay in Portland or near enough to access the restaurants, bars and nightlife readily from a more beachlike vacation. The Old Port area of Portland is where all this is happening, and an adjacent art district. There is also a minor league baseball team. There are ferries that can get you out to many of the islands on Casco Bay. There are several major hotels in the Old Port - Hilton Garden Inn, Regency, Holiday Inn and the Eastland. Hilton overlooks the harbor and Casco Bay Ferry terminal. Eastland is an older hotel.
You may perfer to stay at a nearby beach hotel, though. Look at Cape Elizabeth, although anywhere from Kennebunkport to the south to Freeport north of the city will be within a half hour of Portland. There are tons of hotels, B%26amp;Bs, etc. though you are not likely to find chain hotels among them, except away from the beaches and on the main roads, like Rte 1 and along the Interstate. Folks here may have an assortment of good suggestions, but if you go lookoing online, you can always pop a couple of names up on this forum and get quick reaction.
There are other great areas to vacation in Maine. A favorite of mine and many others on this forum is Bar Harbor and Acadia Notaional Park. Great recreational opportunities, totally beautiful settings, and good restaurants, cafes, nightlife in Bar Harbor and the other smaller towns on the island (Mount Desert Island).
But there are many other fun places, too. I%26#39;ll leave that to others.

If you%26#39;re looking for the true Maine experience, don%26#39;t go to Cape Cod. It%26#39;s in Massachusetts.
cofo18,
Try the Bangor area. Acadia National Park is 45 minutes away with numerous other lakes, and beaches nearby. Bangor has a nice selection of bars for the nightlife downtown. On August 24th and continuing thru the weekend there is the American folk festival in downtown Bangor. Check out the web site, wicked good music dancing and food and it%26#39;s all free!
The only thing that I would argue with paintchip about is the time to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Having driven that route many, many times under all sorts of weather and traffic conditions, I%26#39;ve never done it in less than an hour. Nonetheless, Acadia is defintely within easy day-trip distance of Bangor. Also, it is likely to be cooler on the island than in Bangor.
One thing I forgot to add in my initial post. Fair season tends to be August and September, at least that is the case in NH. Is Maine the same? At least that is the county and state fairs and 4-H fairs. I don%26#39;t know about padticular themed fairs, like the one in Bangor that someone mentioned.
Good suggestions here but if coming from Philly area for an ';extended weekend'; Acadia and Bar Harbor is quite a long way to drive (you didn%26#39;t mention how you would be traveling, I%26#39;m assuming via car) Maine is a very large state for the east. Sebago Lake is a beautiful place with State Parks with nice beaches plus you would be near the nightlife of Portland, (Old Port is really fun, a couple good brewbubs (Sebago Brewing Co is one on my favs) and like another post mentioned the ferries out to the islands of Casco Bay would give you a real ';maine'; feel. Old Orchard Beach is 1/2 south of Portland and if you want a really kitchy old time beach town with a pier (in maine speak that%26#39;s pronounced peeaa)with arcade and carnival rides lining the sandy beach.
