I am looking to spend a week in Maine this August. I%26#39;m married with three kids 6, 10, 13. We enjoy the outdoors kayaking, fishing, swimming, and would be interested in renting a cottage probably on a lake that rents boats. We have never been to Maine before so we are opened to suggestions.

How about hiking and biking added to all that? My number one family recommendation would be Acadia National Park/Mount desert Island/Bar Harbor. This is an coastal island in the Atlantic, loaded with outdoor recreation opportunities, and all the concessions to rent the gear you need, if you don%26#39;t bring your own. Sea kayaking, swimming in a wondeful lake or ice cold ocean, fishing - ocean or lake, Bicycling on an extensive network of old carriage roads laid out at the turn of the last century, hiking - all levels of difficulty or ease, SOme of the most beautiful scenery inthe world, whale watches, nature cruises to see porpoises, harbor seals, bald eagles and much more, quaint towns with excellent restaurants, and more and more. Scan through the forum topics and read anything having to do with Bar Harbor.
There are a lot of weekly summer rentals available all over the island, and off island, too. We used to rent a little place in Trenton (not NJ), right on a little cove where our kids could explore inthe water. Unfortunately, those folks are no longer renting. But every trip I have made to that area has been absolutely memorable.

Look into Migis Lodge or Aimhi Lodge.
