my husband and i are planning a holiday to boston and then travelling to bangor maine stopping in various places.our 13 year old will be travelling with us.could someone please let us know when the schools break for the summer vacation and how long it lasts
school holidaysAs a general rule, there are no state or national laws specifying particular school year opening and closing dates. In Maine, schools more often than not open for students on the Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day (i.e., September 4 or 5 for 2007), and close around the second week of June. However, Maine schools sometimes start the week before Labor Day, particularly if Labor Day (the first Monday in September) is late that year, and sometimes end at the end of the first week of June. Also, if there have been a lot of snow days that year, school may not let out in June until the third week.
In other parts of the country, particularly in the south, school often begins and ends up to a couple of weeks earlier; i.e., it may start in mid-August and end at the end of May. Because of that, we often find in Maine that although the big dropoff in tourists occurs with the end of Labor Day weekend, there is a smaller, but noticeable dropoff the last week or two of August.
Colleges and university schedules are all over the map. It%26#39;s not unusual for a college or university to begin as early as early August and let out in early May---or even at the end of April.
If you are hoping that there will be other children around when you visit, your best bet is to come anytime from the end of June through the first week or two of August.
Just FYI, we have had cool June weather the last couple of years, so if you%26#39;re looking for the best beach weather, you might want to consider mid-July on.
