We%26#39;re considering trip to Maine during the week of June 11 to June 16. We know that we will spend some time on the coast, but are also considering going inland to Moosehead Lake area.
Will we be overcome by the flies that I hear so much about in the lakes area? Or, would it be preferable to come at another time?
Thanks!
Maine - June 11 to June 16
Hello wintersummer. It will be a bit buggy and not extremely warm yet. I think coastal areas are less buggy than inland lakes. July is when our summer really starts. Funny thing, i just read your ';donuts'; posting in san diego. I%26#39;m headed there next week with my daughter. any tips?

Every season is different I guess, but we were there two June%26#39;s ago and had no problems. Wash all your clothes with BOUNCE or smelly softener and put some extra smelly stuff in your suitcases and in your car, they don%26#39;t like that stuff. Eat garlic or take garlic capsules(from the vitamin store) every day and the bugs will stay away!
Thanks for the replies! I think we%26#39;ve made decision to make the trip somewhat later, maybe August. I did some searching on this forum and found enough information to make me realize that I didn%26#39;t want to deal with bugs (something about wearing nets over your head....not my idea of a good vacation!)
Hampfan - It%26#39;s so cool that you ran across my postings on the San Deigo board. Last year another tripadvisor member and I were both on the Hawaii and Montana boards. I may try out the new tripadvisor feature to contact you directly and fill you in on some of the things we did...from your posts, it sounds like we have comparable interests - however, I didn%26#39;t think of looking for Farmer%26#39;s Markets. That%26#39;s something I love to do, but didn%26#39;t do it in San Diego. I do like finding things that are unique to an area (thus, my interest in locally owned donut places). We also were at the Marriott Marina.
I%26#39;ve been reading both your post in both forums. Im leaving for SD in 10 days with my family. Small world. TA is such a great such these type of things are bound to happen. Some time in SD is going to be a great break from this return of winter, foot of fresh snow in my yard yesterday.
CountyMounty - welcome to the group of us who have been to and those who are going to San Diego!
Here%26#39;s a followup to my question about Moosehead Lake in June. We made the decision to delay this trip, mainly because of the black flies and advice on this board. I was all settled in my mind, and then, just today, there was an article in USA Today listing Moosehead Lake as a place to see in June because of MooseMania. I%26#39;m back to being confused now about the timing of our trip!
I would definitely recommend waiting until August--for two reasons:
1) The black flies can be horrendous in June--especially if it%26#39;s a wet spring. (Which so far, it has been.) Black flies are nasty.
2) If USA Today says to go there in June, you can bet the roads will be clogged with moose-seeking folks ';from away.'; Trust me, it%26#39;s the rare trip to the Moosehead region, regardless of the time of year, that you won%26#39;t spot a moose.
Wait %26#39;til August. The lake will be warmer. The skies will be bug-free. And the moose will be glad that the masses who came to see them in June have long since gone home.
Enjoy your trip!
