Forgive my ignorance, but could someone please explain the process of getting to Bar Harbor from the airport in Bangor? Is it fairly straightforward? Should one rent a car, or is traveling by train an option? About how long does it take?
Thanks very much.
Getting to Bar HarborThe only reasonable option is to rent a car. There is no train.
Driving time from Bangor to Bar Harbor is roughly an hour and a quarter. With the newly redone sections of Rte. 1A, it is pretty smooth going.
You haven%26#39;t said when the wedding will be. July and August are the busiest months here; sometimes (especially in early July) Ellsworth can be a bit of a bottleneck---other times it also is fairly smooth going and there is a route around the most congested section.
As to biting insects and your allergy, the time to avoid is late May through June. That is when the blackflies and mosquitoes are prevalent. Blackflies usually are gone by eary July and mosquitoes tend to dwindle in all but the really low-lying areas. So don%26#39;t schedule the ceremony or reception next to a wetland. ;--%26gt;
For what it%26#39;s worth, my recommendation would be to come here in late September or early October. The weather is still mild, the insects are at a minimum, and you may even get to see some autumn color.
Getting to Bar HarborI should have added that there %26lt;is%26gt; bus transportation:

I still think that the best bet is the rental car.
Wow, thank you so much, cwvoigt. You really are a local expert! September may be a little bit challenging with my school schedule, but it sounds like it would really be worth juggling my calendar a little. who wants to spend their wedding day covered in hives?!
thanks again, your advice is much appreciated.
