My husband and I are planning our annual vacation with mom and are considering Bar Harbor in June. We will be traveling with my daughter and her husband too. We were considering renting a house in town but are now looking at the Bayview Townhouses. They offer a nice location with the 3 bedrooms that we need, plus a free shuttle into town. The only one-week block of dates for June they had available (June 8-14) is earlier than we had hopped. Also, I am concerned because I just found out that the Island Explorer does not begin service until June 22. My questions: Is this the right place to take an 81 year old, who cannot walk more than a short distance? Will there be enough to do that does not involve walking for her? Will it be to cold for her at that time? Can our daughter %26amp; husband find ways to do things on their own without the Explorer? Is the Bayview townhome location a good one for our needs or would we be better renting a house in town? Thanks for any advice offered.

There are some nice things to do at that time of year that an 81-year-old would enjoy. There is Oli%26#39;s Trolley which gives a nice two hour, narrated tour of Bar Harbor and Acadia. There is tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House. On pleasant days they serve out on the lawn overlooking the lake. On chilly days they serve inside where there is a stone fireplace.
June is usually in the 70s or 80s but it does chill way down in the evenings. Be sure she brings a warm sweater for going out to dinner.
Will you all be sharing the one car? If your daughter and her husband like hiking, there will be lots to do and you could drop them off at a trailhead and arrange to pick them up some hours later. They could hike, for example, along the carriage roads starting at Eagle Lake and end up meeting you at Jordan Pond for those popovers.
It%26#39;s hard to say if the townhome would be better than a house in town. It would be nice if you could come a little later when the Island Explorer buses are running. On the other hand, it will be less crowded in town in early June, which is why the buses don%26#39;t start until late June.
Another thing you could consider is staying at one of the old Bar Harbor mansions that is turned into a Bed and Breakfast. Your mother might like that. For example, The Cleftstone Manor is decorated very old-timey. Breakfast is gracious. Your mother would have the run of the public rooms and could talk to other guests during the day while the younger ones do something more active. You could book three rooms and have some privacy from each other while still having the public space and a good breakfast.
The Cleftstone Manor is just one of the inns like that. There are quite a few others right in Bar Harbor.

Thanks for your reply Bonniemaev. We are bringing one car.
The mansion B %26amp;Bs sound delightful, but we want a house so
the we may save money and be able to cook some meals at home. The Bayview is by the water, is it near the walking trail?
I am sure we will find many things to do and have an enjoyable stay. Thanks again.
Between the Bay View Townhouses and the village of Bar Harbor, lies the campus of the College of the Atlantic. There isn%26#39;t really a path through the campus to town. But there is a sidewalk along the street. You can get an idea of the size of Bar Harbor and the location of the Bay View Townhouses by going to this web site sponsored by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce:

One of the maps is of the village. College of the Atlantic is labeled on the map. Bay View is just to the left of that.
