I am leaving my Boston hotel the morning of 9/2 and have to be in bar harbor on 9/4 to check in at the Bayview.
My current Itinerary is to stop at portland for 1 night and camden the other night.
Any rcomendations as to where to stay at either of these places something not to expensive. Also any suggestion as to which towns are must see along the way and what to do.
How about some nice restaurants along the way.
Feel free to jugle my itinerary around i am opened to suggestions.
need help with Itinerary from boston to bar harborJust to put some relative driving times in the equation:
Boston to Mount Desert Island (Bar Harbor) is roughly five hours via I-96 to Bangor and 1-A to Bar Harbor; add an hour if you take the coastal route (1 %26amp; 3) once your are north of Portland. Normally, two hours from Boston would put you in Portland and four hours would put you in Camden. The Boston-Portland leg might take a little longer on Labor Day weekend; the Portland -Camden leg as well.
So at any rate, you have sufficient time to briefly explore some of the coastal towns south of Portland. Others more familiar with that area can provide ideas. Or, you could push through to Portland and spent the rest of the day exploring the Old Port Area. In that regard, my two favorite places to stay are the Portland Regency and the Hilton Garden Inn (the one on Commercial St.) As to cost, I have no idea what the rates will be that time of year.
I%26#39;ve said before on these forums that it%26#39;s pretty difficult to get a bad meal in Portland. If you are interested in seafood, I suggest Street %26amp; Company in the Old Port area. If you are interested in basic lobster, DeMillo%26#39;s floating restaurant in the Old Port area can provide it. I%26#39;m sure that you will get other suggestions soon.
Freeport (L.L. Bean et al.) is about 20 minutes from downtown Portland. The Freeport exits on I-296 as well as one or two notheast of Freeport will put you on Rte 1---the coastal route.
If you are interested in art, I recommend a stop in Rockland at the Farnsworth Museum. It always has several displays of Maine-related art, including some from the early artists who made Mount Desert Island known for its scenery. The Farnsworth also houses the Wyeth Center, devoted to the works of three Wyeths.
I suggest you post on the Camden forum for ideas on lodging and eating there.
Camden has a lovely harbor; if the weather is good, take the drive to the top of Mt. Battie.
