My husband and I are going to go sea kayaking in Acadia when we visit in late June. What should we wear? I figure layers but I wasn%26#39;t sure about pants or shorts, sneakers or sandals? Any tips?
sea kayaking?
First rule---if you don%26#39;t get wet, you at least will get quite damp. Generally, experienced kayakers avoid cotton, which soaks up water, holds it, and makes you cold. Late June should be quite mild, although the water will be cold (the North Atlantic is never warm). Lycra/spandex shorts are a good idea---anything that wicks moisture away is a good thing---in either shorts or tops.
In launching or getting out to take a break (depending on how long your kayak trip is), you probably will be standing in ankle-deep water. I think that some of the tours (maybe all) provide you with booties that won%26#39;t keep your feet dry, but will keep them fairly warm. Sandals dry more quickly than sneakers but I don%26#39;t know if flip-flops would give you the protection you might need during the pre-launch activities---virtually all of our beaches are rock rather than sand.
Layering is fine but remember that in the kayak you will be wearing a life vest as well as the kayak ';skirt'; and trying to keep track of your paddle, so changing layers isn%26#39;t going to be that easy (besides, when you are under way, there%26#39;s not much place to stow anything that you take off). Depending on the weather, I%26#39;d go with either a long or short-sleeved T-shirt or polo shirt. Once you get paddling, you should be warm enough. A hat with a brim or bill, by all means. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also a very good idea.
Have fun. Seeing MDI and the mountains of Acadia from the water gives one a different perspective.
