My husband and I are planning a trip to Maine from June 4-9 to celebrate our 20-year anniversary. We never got to take much of a honeymoon, so this is it, 20 years later! We plan to drive from Boston to Acadia and back, so let me know if that is too much. Also, I%26#39;m reading that it will be cool (does that mean 50 or 60 or 70 degrees?) and buggy, but maybe not too buggy on the coast?
Here%26#39;s the plan:
Day 1-Monday
We have our flight booked into Boston Logan arriving at noon. We%26#39;ve reserved a convertible (and we realize we may have the top UP the whole week!) and we%26#39;ll drive probably as far as Portland on the first day. Will we have time to explore Kennebunk or Cape Elizabeth on the way?
Day 2-Tuesday
Explore Portland %26amp; Freeport. I%26#39;d like to take the mailboat and/or learn how to sea-kayak with LL Bean. Will we have time for both?
Day 3-Wednesday
Check out of hotel in Portland and head north. Maybe an overnight on Bailey Island? A friend has highly recommended it.
Day 4-Thursday
Check out of hotel on Bailey Island and drive into Boothbay or Rockland area to spend the night?
Day 5-Friday
Bar Harbor--Acadia
Day 6-Saturday
Check out and head south. Our flight leaves Boston at 7p.m. so we ought to be able to make it, even with a leisurely stop for lunch.
Sunday--Get our kids back from Grandma and take a nap!!
As you can probably tell, I know very little about Maine. Never been there, but I%26#39;m really looking forward to the trip. My husband and I enjoy hiking, walking out of our hotel to explore any area and a little shopping. We love to find restaurants with fresh local foods. We plan to eat a lot of lobster rolls and blueberry pie with ice cream, although we%26#39;re hoping to have some great breakfasts--maybe blueberry pancakes!
Any suggestions for restaurants, hiking trails, boat trips, or other activities are WELCOME. We want to experience Maine, and if we%26#39;re trying to fit in too much, please let us know!
Thanks!
Trip itinerary--please help!
I think that%26#39;s doable. You could indeed explore Cape Elizabeth on your way from Boston to Portland. I personally wouldn%26#39;t try to fit the mailboat in on Tuesday. Just explore the Old Port area of Portland and then go up to Freeport and do your kayak with L.L. Bean.
On Thursday I%26#39;d continue on through Rockland and make it to Acadia that night. You should be able to take your time driving and exploring from Bailey Island to the Bar Harbor area. I%26#39;d stop for lunch in Camden that day. That%26#39;s a very nice town to walk around in. Go up to the top of Mount Battie to catch the view. When you leave there you can be in Bar Harbor in two hours.
That would leave you Thursday evening to explore the village of Bar Harbor and all day Friday to take a nice hike in Acadia National Park.

Hi Boo%26#39;,
You%26#39;ve got a great start here, but I think you%26#39;ve stretched things out a bit. By the time you arrive at Acadia, it%26#39;s time to turn around! Many people spend days--weeks--exploring the park and surrounding area. Here%26#39;s my shot at an alternate itinerary:
Day 1
Get to Portland. (About two hours from Boston/Logan.) Check into a hotel in the Old Port--a great area with cobblestone streets, fabulous restaurants, galleries, shops, and the like. If you get here early enough, you can drive out to Cape Elizabeth (15 minutes) and check out the famed Portland Head Light.
Day 2
Start your trip north. Freeport, home of L.L.Bean is only 20 minutes up the road. Get to the store early and sign-up for a ';walk on adventure.'; For $15, they%26#39;ll load you onto a mini-bus and shuttle you to their paddling center, on Casco Bay for a 1-1/2 hour excursion. (It%26#39;s an incredible deal!) When you get back to town, there%26#39;s great outlet shopping for you and yours. Once you%26#39;re done with Freeport, head north to Camden for the night (About 1-1/2 hours). Enjoy a nice dinner and check into one of the many Victorian-era B%26amp;Bs around town.
Day 3
Take a leisurely ride up along the coast on your way to Bar Harbor. Too many towns to mention here, but the views are incredible--with chowder to match. Arrive in Bar Harbor for the night.
Day 4 and 5
Enjoy Acadia National Park! I%26#39;ll leave it to some of the other TA members more familiar with the area to provide suggestions on things to do and places to go, but you%26#39;ll want at least two full days here. (I%26#39;ve been with my family many times, and we always wish we could stay longer.)
Day 6
Bar Harbor to Boston is probably a solid 5 hours on the Interstate--without stopping. Our family tradition is to visit the top of Cadillac Mountain for sunrise on our last day on the island. The kids love getting into the car while it%26#39;s still dark and proclaiming that they%26#39;re the first kids in America to see the sunrise. It%26#39;s a kick.
Enjoy your trip to Maine! (You%26#39;ll be ready for that nap!)
Thank you so much, Mainescape! Great suggestions we%26#39;ll probably follow. I feel like we%26#39;ll have to at least drive to Bailey Island, though, on our way up to Acadia.
Thanks, Bonniemaev! Great info . . . I wish we had a month!
