Hi y%26#39;all. I have a question about lodging on our trip from Boston to Maine June 20-26, Wednesday through Tuesday. We plan on being in York or Ogunquit or Kennebunk Wednesday evening for sure, and Boston Monday night before leaving Tuesday evening. I haven%26#39;t made any reservations because we want to leisurely explore and not have any real agenda. Are there enough hotels, inns, B%26amp;Bs around that we won%26#39;t have to worry about finding a room? We really just want to explore the coastal towns from Kittery to possibly Portland. I don%26#39;t even know if we%26#39;ll make it to Portland. Any advice on route, places to stay, eat, etc. will be appreciated. I have always gotten good advise from these boards in the past. There%26#39;s so much I want to see while there, but I know it%26#39;s not possible in just one trip. We enjoy looking at architecture, small towns, eating of course. And I would love to be able to fit in a ferry trip in Casco Bay if we make it up that far. Thanks to all who contribute on this forum. It is so helpful.
Boston to Maine and Back
It%26#39;s not high season, so plenty of rooms should be available at prices that are better than usual.
However, you still might want to go ahead and make reservations ahead of time if you want the more affordable room in the hotel. Maybe by waiting til the last minute you find the less expensive rooms are taken? Plus, shopping for a room in person will eat up your valuable vacation time.
Portland to Kittery (by interstate) is only an hour so it would be very easy for you to cover Southern Maine fairly thoroughly in the time you have. I%26#39;d suggest you pick one spot, centrally located, as your base and go out each day from there.
Ogunquit or Kennebunk/Kennebunkport would be nice choices. Both have lots of accomodations in a range of prices. York is also a lovely town, tho it%26#39;s toward the southern end of your target area.
Y%26#39;all have a great time!
Boston to Maine and Back
I%26#39;d agree with Michele about making reservations. I am also a bit more cautious about finding lodging, especially on the weekend. Weekdays may be easier. But school will be out by that weekend. Mostly, though, you may cut yourself out of better choices, and, as Michele stated, you%26#39;ll waste vacation time checking out places. Moreover, you may find that you wish you had planned on a place to stay in Portland%26#39;s Old Port, rather than being stuck in the Super 8 out at the Airport and Mall. Or the Cozy Mozy Motel out on Rte 1, rather than some nice hotel or B%26amp;B near the beach in Ogunquit.
By the way, the Old Port in POrtland is where you get the ferries to Casco Bay Islands. Very doable. Also, Michele%26#39;s suggestion to have a base or two is a very good one for this area. Staying in Portland for a couple of nights is ideal for exploring that city and surrounding areas. But if you want to explore the coastal towns, it is nice to stay among them and get to enjoy the pace and feel of them.
I think the Cozy Mozy is somewhere near Ellsworth. :)
