Just wondering what the black fly situation is like this year. We are planning a trip 28th May and wondered if the bloom has occured yet and what the weather has been like?
Any predictions?
Black Fly Status
They are emerging---small numbers have been around for a week or so--- but we are nowhere near the peak populations yet. The spring has been quite cool. For example, our daytime temperatures the past week have mostly been in the 40s with some much-needed but cold rain. It is supposed to warm up toward the weekend--hitting the 70s (with no relief in sight ;--%26gt;) so there may an increase in emergence just in time to take advantage of all of the fresh meat.

Not much in the Kennebunk area as of yet, but it is supposed to get warm near the end of the week. If there%26#39;s no sea breeze, they will emerge! Be prepared!
I cut my back lawn for the first time this season yesterday. Nary a black fly bothered me.
we are headed up to acadia this weekend....trying to decide if we should pack the camping gear and hope for a site at seawall, or if the flies will be too nasty with the warmer weather and we should get a cabin somewhere. Also if we go the cabin route I am looking at a few cabins, some on ponds/lakes, and others with views of the ocean...are the pond/lake cabins going to be noticably worse than the ocean views?
thanks!
The probability of a lot of insect life, whether mosquitoes or black flys, will be greater near fresh water ponds, lakes, and streams. I haven%26#39;t been in the Seawall campground, so I have nothing to offer on that.
As you have noted from reading this thread, black flys have not been a problem---so far. With a decent supply of repellent, Seawall might be worth a try.

This makes me a little nervous, as we have a cabin rented on Great Pond about 26 miles from Bar Harbor in mid July. Is it going to be so bad that we won%26#39;t be able to sit outside in the evenings?!
I don%26#39;t know, but I doubt it. I have never seen mosquitoes here like there are in much of the midwest (I grew up in Wisconsin). However, others on this forum have more experience with inland conditions here.
