4th of July in Lubec

We are planning on a trip to ';down east'; Maine and Grand Manan over the 4th of July week. We plan on being in Lubec, Maine on the 3rd or 4th of July. Does anyone know when fireworks are or is there a good place to view fireworks on the Maine coast?

4th of July in Lubec

Lubec%26#39;s celebration is somewhat small, but the next island over Eastport has a large celebration. You will be able to see the fireworks over Treat%26#39;s island from Lubec, or if you can, find someone to take you out on a boat. There are chartered boats in Eastport and there should be a couple in Lubec. You can also drive over to Campobello and watch them from the Beach on the canadian side. The Canadians also do a large fireworks display on July 1st for their independence day from Deer Island, which you can see from Eastport and Campobello.

The best place to watch the fireworks in Eastport is on the ';boardwalk'; which is a sidewalk essentially that runs the length of the breakwater and there are rocks to sit on. You can also watch it from the pier or the hill where the High School is.

I don%26#39;t think Lubec does fireworks for the 4th that I can recall as most of the people come to Eastport.

There are events every day for kids and adults and multiple parades and contests, including a cod-fish relay and a greasy pole contest where you climb out off the pier on a greased up telephone pole and attempt to grab a flag on the end without falling in. (You won%26#39;t come back dry, but you might get the flag). The island is packed every year.

4th of July in Lubec

carolyn_joe is correct. Eastport has a much larger July 4th celebration although Lubec%26#39;s has been gaining over the past few years. I would definately go to Eastport and take a walk downtown. It will likely be crowded and you may have to park and walk a ways but it is about the biggest celebration we have around here and Eastport has a nice downtow. Water St will be lined with vendors and craft booths and part of the pier also. There will be atleast one Navy ship in port for the celebration. As mentioned the fireworks can be seen easily from anywhere along the waterfront or from the area around the schools. The events generally stretch out of several days with July 4 being the highlight with a very large parade and fireworks. The fireworks are not big compared to any big city but there are by far the best for the area and possibly the best in the state. After dark all the bars (all 3 of them) will be packed and it turns into quite a party with 300+ sailors looking to have a good time so if you are not in the partying mood I would leave early. Are you just in the area for a day or staying for a few days. There are very few hotels/motels in the immediate area and most will book up early during that week with sailors families that come to spend the week with them.

Tho Eastport is geographically very close to Lubec, the drive by car is over an hour because you have to go all the way back to Route 1 and then go around Cobscook Bay. So, you are making over an hour drive.

About the same distance away but to the west is Jonesport, which also has a Fourth of July parade, and it%26#39;s followed by Lobster Boat Racing. If you%26#39;ve never seen a lobster boat race, that might be a real kick. You might consider going to Jonesport for their parade and the races, and plan to get home in time to see the fireworks from Eastport.

P.S. Mapquest maps the way from Lubec to Eastport via Canada (Campobello) but that requires taking TWO ferries and I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it as you could end up waiting a while on ferries at each spot. These ferries are very small and you could arrive to find so many folks already in line ahead of you that you won%26#39;t get on the next boat.

I certainly wouldn%26#39;t try to come back that way at in the late afternoon (assuming a ferry is even running that late) as you could risk getting stranded on Deer Island.

See www.eastcoastferries.nb.ca/timetables.htm

Good advice Michele S. Definately do not try to use the ferry unless you want to wait a lot, they will be very busy. Jonesport would be another good option, there celebration is no where near as big as EP but the lobster boat races add an interesting twist. Machias will also have a parade and fireworks but both are small compared to Eastport. It just all depends on how much time you have and where exactly you are staying or where you need to end up and when.

Forgot to mention if you happen to go to Eastport they offer tours of whatever ship(s) are in port during certain times. Generally it is from mid morning until around dinner time on the 3rd and 4th.

I would definitely recommend that you do not rely on the Canadian ferries as a mode of transportation the week of July 4th they are quite crowded and slow. The drive from Lubec to eastport is kind of a pain, but I suppose you could qualify it as scenic. There is a large state park on the way through edmunds/dennysville where I believe you can dig for clams, maybe a half-bushel or so, or you used to be able to for personal consumption. There is also a reversing falls.

The one nice thing about the Eastport-Deer Isle ferry is that if you can time it right the ferry from Eastport to deer island is a couple of dollars (walking, no car) and it goes right through the middle of old sow which is one of the largest whirlpools in the world, if I remember right. Deer Island is a little too big to walk the entire thing, but it is a great place to ride your bike if you have one.

Also you have to have a Rosies hot dog in eastport (you won%26#39;t miss it there will be at least 50 people in line) while you are there and visit Rayes Mustard mill which is the last stone-ground mustard mill in the US.

As mentioned before there are only a handful of bars open now, there used to be more, typically the Cannery (Chowder House now I believe) is the biggest and has the most going on, it is located in a converted sardine factory, and has a working lobster pound on the back end of the pier, it is also where the Ferry arrives from canada, they typically have live music all week at night.

The chowder house is a great place for dinner. I would clear out by 7 or 8pm though unless you want to be with the party crowd. The place will be absolutely packed most nights for the week. The past 3 years I have one of the half dozen extra officers assigned to help keep the crowd under control, if I didn%26#39;t have to be there I wouldn%26#39;t be for sure. Everyone has a good time but some too good of a time (that they dont remember the next day). I would go recommend it for an early dinner for sure.

Hell illtryanythingonce, im from lubec maine, great place here to watch fireworks, the sad thing is we dont have a 4th of july at all, and i think right now we dont even have a commitee so its not for looking good for us even having a 4th. of july celebration here anyway!!! just thought id let u know before u wasted 2 or 3 days and hundreds of dollars in gas on ur way here, (GAS HERE IS 3.09 A GALLON!!!!!)
