Hi there
We%26#39;re coming from Edinburgh in Scotland to New York in July and have decided to take 3 days to fly up to Portland, hire a car and see some of the coastline.
Just wondered if anyone could suggest any suitable itineraries / routes. I will be 20 weeks pregnant so whilst we are normally adventurous we don%26#39;t want to overdo it (although the husband would still like to know about the exciting stuff so he can deposit his expanding wife with a good book and view for a few hours).
We%26#39;re not stuck to Portland so happy to travel out and stay at other places, that%26#39;s just where we%26#39;re flying in and out of.
Many thanks in advance for any information offered.
Caroline sitting in on a very rainy day in Scotland (nothing unusual there then ;-) )
3days in Portland - Ideas for day / overnight trips?Portland is lovely for a short escape. There is no shortage of fabulous food and fun things to do. Some suggestions? I attached a Go List below:

3days in Portland - Ideas for day / overnight trips?A day trip (or an overnight trip) that you might enjoy is to motor on downeast on Rte. 1 from Portland to the Rockland/Camden area.
Among other things, Rockland has teh Farnsworth Museum---anexcellent collection of art, mostly associated with Maine, including works by many of the early artists who made the Maine coast famous, as well as a large collection of the works of the Wyeths.
Camden has a lovely harbor and great views from the top of Mt. Battie (and you can drive there!).
From Bath onwards on Rte 1. you can take roads down on the various peninsulas--Haprswell, Phippsburg, Boothbay, Georgetown, St. George, among others.
The easiest way to pick up Rte. 1 probably is to take Interstate 295 from Portland to Freeport---about a 20-minute drive, then cut over to Rte. 1.
Two Lights State Park along with Portland Head Light are just south of the city and absolutely beautiful. You can get right up to the rocky coast but not exert yourself unless you want to. Lovely places to sit and relax while your husband hikes. Just past Two Lights State Park up by the lighthouses in a wonderful lobster shack right on the water. Wonderful lobster rolls with picnic tables outside. Camden/Rockland/Rockport are all lovely but you could get stuck in horrible traffic on Rt 1. If you only have 3 days I would recommend staying right around Portland. Casco Bay ferries have great tours of Casco Bay. Up in Freeport is LL Bean as well as Wolf Neck State Park. Lovely, easy path that goes along Casco Bay. Magical. Fore Street is a very good place to eat in Portland. The bakery below is amazing. Gilberts chowder lives up to it%26#39;s reputation...delicious! There is a good tourist/information center right on Commercial St in Portland and they can give you lots of information. Have fun!
I agree with everything previously posted----just want to add that this is really a special summer to visit the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland as they are having a big Andrew Wyeth show this summer in honour of his 90th (I think) birthday. Lots of paintings are on loan that are not part of the regular collection.
ill second casco bay ferries to peaks island - just a short trip on the upper deck with good bay breezes so nice on a hot afternoon
bumping up for Jnev
