Old Orchard Beach--good idea?

Old Orchard Beach...is it a good idea to visit during the 4th of July weekend? I%26#39;ll be in portland with friends for 3 days. I have heard the views are beautiful..but the area can be quite kitschy and crowded. Not sure if i want that experience. I%26#39;m looking for a nice and relatively quick drive to a more coastal area from Portland for a day trip...any recommendations?

thanks!

how many people do u want to see -- do u want natural and fresh -- or inhabited but lightly populated?

natural and fresh could be phippsburg peninsula or head beach and inhabited but lightly populated could be freeport-brunswick-harpswell to wolfe%26#39;s neck state park or to bailey island for further (60 to 90 mins) - two lights and portland head light for closer (30 mins)

OOB is a zoo : ) but it can be pretty at night on July 4

It%26#39;s VERY kitschy and VERY crowded. I am guessing it won%26#39;t be what you are looking for.

I agree with the previous poster%26#39;s recommendations. Wolfe%26#39;s Neck won%26#39;t be beach though, if that%26#39;s what you are looking for (it%26#39;s tidal/coastal with walking trails) It%26#39;s 20-25 minutes%26#39; drive from Portland. Scarborough Beach is nice, with a lovely cliff walk at one end. This is very close to Portland (15-20 minutes). I do like Popham a lot (the Phippsburg idea), one can walk for miles along the beach to a very uninhabited part of it, or in the other direction along the river to the fort. At low tide one can walk out the the island. This is an hour%26#39;s drive from Portland.

Otherwise for beaches consider the southern coastal towns---Ogunquit, Wells, York, and to a certain extent Kennebunkport. From Portland these beaches are 40 minutes to 1 hour%26#39;s drive.

Camden and Rockport are scenic coastal towns with lovely shops and a big sailing scene. These towns are an hour and a half to 2 hours drive.
