We are flying into Portland on July 15 around 11:00am and would like to see a little of the town before driving to Freeport and then off to Bar Harbor for the week. Is the airport close to anything worth seeing? We have two adults and two children ,age nine. Should we just drive right away to Freeport? Thanks for any suggestions.
How far is Portlands airport from some Portland sightseeing
Portland isn%26#39;t really a very large city. So, yes, you would have time to take in a few sights before heading up to Freeport. I%26#39;d go from the airport to the Portland Head lighthouse. It should be only a 20 minute drive or so. The lighthouse itself is very pretty and the grounds are spectacular. The grounds are an old army base that is now being run as parkland by the good people of Cape Elizabeth, a ritzy southern suburb of Portland.
When you leave the lighthouse grounds, you could drive through the Old Port area of Portland and take in the sights from the car or stop for coffee and an ice cream cone.
Once you leave Portland, Freeport is only 20 minutes further north. Then I would advise getting on Interstate 95 and taking the fast route to Bar Harbor. Stay on I-95 all the way to Bangor where you will see I-395. Take that exit. From Freeport to Bangor is a little under two hours. From Bangor to Bar Harbor is a bit over an hour. It%26#39;s just a two lane highway and can be slow-going through Ellsworth.
