We are flying into Portland July 15 around 11:00am and I was wondering how far the airport is from some fun stuff to see in Portland before we travel to Freeport for a little shopping and the off to Bar Harbor for a week? We have two adults and two children, age nine. Thanks for the help.
Distance from Portland airport to sightseeing
You%26#39;re driving, correct? The Old Port of Portland, which is a must-see, is just a few minutes (around 15) from the airport. The airport is pretty small and, since you%26#39;re arriving on a Sunday, it shouldn%26#39;t take long at all to pick up a car rental at the airport, assuming that%26#39;s what you%26#39;re doing.
Casco Bay Lines ferries is right there in the Old Port if you want to take a nice tour of the islands off Portland.
Freeport is just a 15- to 20-minute drive straight up I-295.

Thank you for the reply. That gives me a good idea of where the airport is and where to go. Can you suggest a great place for lunch before we head to Freeport?
Arriving around 11:00, I would head right out to Cape Elizabeth and the Lobster Shack for lunch (20 minutes.) This is next to Two Lights State Park, and both the views and the seafood are to die for. After lunch, visit Fort Williams - home of Portland Headlight, as Bonniemaev mentioned in the Bar Harbor post, still in Cape Elizabeth (10 minutes.) More wonderful views, and in this case you can get right to the lighthouse for exploration.
Then intown to Portland%26#39;s Old Port (15 minutes) for more cool exploration of a very busy working harbor that coexisits with funky shops, restaurants and such.
Then it%26#39;ll be time to head ';downeast'; to Bar Harbor. The suggestion of a ride out into Portland%26#39;s harbor on Casco Bay Lines is an excellent one if you had more time, but with a week in Bar Harbor you%26#39;ll certainly find a way to get out on the water there!
I second Maine-ah%26#39;s suggestion about lunch. Also, do be sure to follow the advice to see Fort Williams park. You will want to take your camera there!
Thank you again for the info. I can%26#39;t wait to get there.
Downeast said that you would want to take your camera. I did:

It wasn%26#39;t a great day for photography (or for photographers, for that matter). I was struck with the colors and textures of the stonework in the Goddard mansion.
