best stop over city before portland?

will have friends traveling from nyc area by car. in order to break up the 6 hour trip, they are looking for a nice stop over city. would manchester or lowell work if they wanted to get bulk of trip out of the way or possibly providence, rhode island for a more scenic experience...any other suggestions?

';Stop over'; as in an overnight or a bathroom break? I can%26#39;t think of any place immediately on the route between NYC and Portland that would be of interest, but if they want to explore someplace off their track: New London, CT and Boston, MA come to mind, but both would add considerably to the trip%26#39;s length.

%26#39;Course six hours does not seem like a terribly long trip to me, so I can%26#39;t imagine why they wouldn%26#39;t just get here :-)

Try Salem, MA (witches, night walking tour) and then hop over to Gloucester (whales).

Depends on the time of year, of course.

an overnight stop over. it seems that new hampshire or connecticut would be safe bets from what others have told me. it%26#39;ll be over a holiday weekend, so i hope they pick a route that%26#39;s not too congested!

thanks for the tips

Road%26gt;

you mite look into portsmouth nh 4.5 hrs from NYC (depends on the hampton toll booth delay) and 1 hr or so from portland

small city thats pedestrian friendly lots of restaurants and historic buildings not spread out all over

easy to get on and off from the hiway also

I don%26#39;t know of anyhing particularly attractive about Lowell.

Manchester is off the route.

How about Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun casinos in CT? I%26#39;m just kidding----unless your friends are really into gambling, in which case I%26#39;m not!

If they took I-84 through CT they could stop at Sturbridge in MA and maybe see Old Sturbridge Village or just do some antiquing in the area. This would be about halfway in the trip from NYC to Portland. It%26#39;s right where I-84 runs into I-90 in MA.

I like jennijanich%26#39;s suggestion of Portsmouth. It really is a very nice town with a lot to offer and it%26#39;s right there, just off I-95. If your friends are into shopping they can do that in downtown Portsmouth and/or just across the border in the many outlet stores in Kittery. Portsmouth is only about 50 miles from Portland.
