Best city/town in Maine to spend 4th of July?

Our vacation plans have been thrown for a bit of a loop. We%26#39;re scrambling to make some late reservations as now we%26#39;ll be in Maine for the 4th of July.

Is there a Maine town that has a notable, can%26#39;t miss 4th of July celebration?

Preferably the Camden area and south.

Thanks.

Hi acadiafan,

I am from Rockland, ME originally (just outside of Camden). We are definintely not known for spectacular fireworks in the area, but Camden does usually have a small display along with the downtown being open most of the night. Your best bet for fireworks would have to be Portland. The Samoset Resort used to have fabulous fireworks, however, that ended years ago under new ownership.

Bar Harbor is 90 minutes north of Camden. But we do have a spectacular July 4th celebration. It starts with a blueberry pancake feed on the Athletic Field in town. 10 a.m. is the parade, complete with Shriner go-carts, rescue greyhounds, kids on decorated tricycles, and bagpipers. After the parade there is a huge lobster feed where the blueberry pancake breakfast doings have concluded. After that there is everything from live music performances in the two town parks to face-painting for the kids. At night the firework display is awesome, unless it is postponed by fog.

Hi acadiafan,

The Boothbay Harbor area has a lively July 4th celebration with fireworks over the harbor, a parade, an arts/crafts show w/live music at the Boothbay Commons, a fashion show, rock skipping contest, and numerous other activities. Check out www.boothbayharbor.com; click on the Visitor section; then click on the calendar and forward till you come to the July calendar for all the listings.

Also, please note the fireworks can be seen easily by land, your hotel or accomodation if you%26#39;re on or very near the water, or by tour boat.

Good luck and have fun wherever you decide to go :).

You may want to consider Freeport this year. LL Bean is celebrating their 95th anniversary with a concert (Robert Cray) and fireworks. There is a small parade in town, fun to watch with all the locals, it runs down Main St.

Last Fourth of July I took my visitors to Bath and we had a blast.

Bath celebrates Heritage Days over the Fourth of July. See http://www.visitbath.com/heritagedays/

We didn%26#39;t head over to the town until late in the day as we went mainly for the fireworks. We arrived to find a patriotic concert on the town green that ended right about sunset, then we walked over to the small carnival in town and rode a handful of rides. The evening was topped off with fireworks.

It had a very relaxed, friendly, small town, wholesome, ';Mayberry'; quality to the day.
