Hi......We are a family of four who will be staying in Milbridge for a week in July. We have been to Maine twice before but this will be the first time staying north of Bar Harbor.
We are planning a few day trips from Milbridge including Bar Harbor and Campobello Island. My question is what are some other towns/attractions between Bar Harbor and Campobello Island that we could explore. Our children are 10 and 5, however the attractions don%26#39;t have to be kid specific.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Bar Harbor to CampobelloThe detached part of Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula near Winter Harbor is a nice place for a drive and a hike. The waves come crashing into the rocky point on windy days. Quite dramatic.
There is a Tidal Falls on one of the peninsulas just a bit northeast of Ellsworth but I can%26#39;t find exactly where that is right now. There is or was a lobster pound quite near there with a nice picnic area.
Straight south of Machias there is Roque Bluffs state park with a pebble beach and nice views.
Lubec is the town in Maine where the bridge goes over to Campobello Island. The tides there are swift and dramatic. You can take a short drive from Lubec to West Quoddy Head where there is nice lighthouse and a trail along the bluffs.
Bar Harbor to CampobelloAnother possibility is the Petit Manan wildlife area/refuge on Petit Manan Point---a very nice (and relatively unknown) area. The road leading to it is Pigeon Hill Road, which is a little over a mile east of Steuben. There are a couple of easy trails in the area.
The Tidal Falls bonniemaey is refereing to is in Frenchman Bay in the town of Hancock. Access is via the East Side Rd off from RT1. There should be a couple small signs for it and also a sign for the restaraunt/take-out/lobster pound
Roque Bluffs beach is nice and there are hiking trails there as well. Jaspers Beach in Machiasport is also another nice stone beach, along the way to that is Fort O%26#39;brien the site of the ';first naval battle of the American Revolution';, there isn%26#39;t much to it but might be worth a quick stop.
Make sure you do go to West Quoddy head in Lubec so you can atleast say you have been to the eastern most point in the US. The park there is a great place for a picnic and the hiking trails there provide a great view of the rocky coast and of Grand Mannan island.
Enjoy your time in my neck of the woods, Milbridge is a great place to relax and escape to the simple life.
lookin for family things...swimming, not the best, water%26#39;s cold in our oceans.
In trenton, next to bar harbor, u might%26#39;ve been here or seen it, there is a place called seacoast funpark, there%26#39;s minigold, a pool, waterslides, an arcade, and go carts!!!!
Between bar harbor, actually, can we set something straight, with everyone not from lubec WEST QUODDY HEAD IS LUBEC, WEST LUBEC WHEN YOU COME INTOO THE TOWN AND SEE WOODS AND FIELDS IS LUBEC, IT%26#39;S ALL THE TOWN BOUNDARY OF LUBEC ONCE U PASS THE SIGN THAT SAYS WELCOME TO LUBEC, THERE%26#39;S A BIG ONE AND A GREEN ONE!!!!!
The Bold Coast puffin tours to Machias Seal Island are outstanding, but I%26#39;m not sure if I%26#39;d try them with the five year old... See http://www.boldcoast.com/ Maybe you can take the sightseeing tour and not the Machias Seal Island tour?
A few years ago Jasper Beach got an awful lot of national press when a group that rates beaches called it one of the best ';wild'; beaches in the US.
It has very unusual rocks, so your kids would probably pack their pockets wtih rocks to bring home. See the photos on this site brucemcmillan.com/PhotoEssay_JasperBchME.html
Jaspers beach is nice for sure, I did not know about that national press it got though Michele, interesting.
Last year we finally found Jasper%26#39;s Beach, the year before we just didn%26#39;t travel far enough. But last year we wanted to see where the rental houses were through HEARTS OF MAINE since 2 of them overlooked Jasper Beach. I was a little disappointed, I knew it was all rocks and stones, but I couldn%26#39;t handle ALL the spiders!!! SO, if little ones(or big ones) are afraid of any type of spider, be prepared!! Other than that it was a beautiful area.
Jonesport is a pretty harbor, especially looking at it from Beal%26#39;s Island.
West Quoddy Lighthouse is nice for kids, it is fenced off for the most part. The West Quoddy gift house I always like because they have lots of made in Maine things.
There is a local restaurant (small house) close by on the main drag I think is Village family Restaruant, they have good food and very friendly.
The East Quoddy Lighthouse on Campobello is awesome when the tide is coming in. I don%26#39;t feel it%26#39;s very safe for young kids, but yours should be fine. There are beaches you can get to that are public and of course is Roosevelt grounds are beautiful, walk down the path to the dock, the view is worth it!!
St. Andrews, New Brunswick, 20 minutes over the Calais border, is a very nice resort town.

Never really noticed the spiders at Jaspers that I recall but its probably not something that would stick in my memory unless they were actually crawling on me. Spiders send my wife running and she has never complained. However, I can see that maybe if you were spending the time constantly picing through the rocks and shells that you would stir some up.
