We will be spending Thanksgiving weekend in Ogunquit--husband, wife, 22-yo daughter and 19-yo son. We are trying to decide between Premium room at Georges Grant and Pool-side room at Anchorage By the Sea. A friend who used to live in York a number of years ago recommended Anchorage by the Sea for its location, though the remodeled premium rooms at Georges Grant sound nice. Is Georges Grant out of the way to the point that we are likely to regret if we stay there? Are the rooms at Anchorage by the Sea as dated and small as some have decribed on this site? Would appreciate any advice. -DCK
Anchorage by the Sea vs Georges Grant
I haven%26#39;t stayed at either place, but I can comment on location. It%26#39;s a bit of a hike to anywhere in Ogunquit from the Gorges Grant. From the Anchorage you can walk anywhere in Ogunquit.
I%26#39;d suggest you look at some of the reviews posted on this site from people who have stayed at both places and decide if you want to walk everywhere or drive. Since it is off season, parking in the Village and Perkins Cove should be easier to find (and probably cheaper) than it is in the summer.
Anchorage by the Sea vs Georges Grant
Thank you for your suggestions.
One thing I will put out there for anyone to respond to... At end of Nov, should we assume we will need to drive everywhere, or is there a good chance we can walk the Marginal Way etc? Just trying to determine if that is something to really consider that time of year.
I also can’t help with where to stay, but I can speak to walking to the Marginal Way. Just remember your warm clothes and enjoy the walk. People use this lovely walking all year around, and although parts of it can get quite icy later in the winter November should still be wonderful. Keep your eye open for the tons of Bitter Sweet that grows along the path, the cherry orange is joyful.
We have stayed at the Anchorage twice the last time in the Tower Section which is across the street from the parking lot, but we liked it as it is more secluded. As stated before you can walk just about anywhere from here fairly easy and you have direct access to the Marginal Way.
We stayed one time at the Anchorage By the Sea in December
(it is open all year) and enjoyed it. Of course, it was cold
and windy, but I remember walking around on the Marginal
Way. Of course, not everything is going to be open at
Perkins Cove off season in the winter, but, on the other hand,
it is definitely less crowded! And you will find some places
open to eat, etc.
I have never stayed at Georges Grant so can%26#39;t comment. You
should probably look it up both on this site, and using a main
site like google, to see what people have said about it
especially lately.
You can easily walk from the Anchorage. You can actually
walk to the beach in Ogunquit if you are willing to walk about
25 minutes on the Marginal Way to the left....and by the
Norseman Motel....onto the beach.
I love the Marginal Way.
You could also try the Beechmere, they are next door to
the Anchorage, and are also open year round. Their buildings
look much older and they tend to be more expensive.
The Sparhawk is also in the same area; I believe it is also
on the Marginal way with some nice views, but I%26#39;ve never
stayed there.
Be sure to ask a lot of questions concerning your room
selection, does it have an actual view, and how much of
a view, and which amenities will actually be working? Achorage
has an indoor heated pool and two outdoor huge tot tubs
but will they be working?
I would avoid their ';specials'; and just book a room, it should
be inexpensive at that time of year. It might be better to stay
on the side of the Anchorage which is actually on the
ocean front.
You can see the ocean but you will not have beach access
unless you walk a ways. The view is beautiful.
The Anchorage is nice; the service isn%26#39;t the greatest....
we liked it every time we stayed....it isn%26#39;t a top place but
the location is top.

We have stayed at both places. Anchorage (just last week) had a nice, recently remodeled room for us in the Beach building, but it%26#39;s on the small side. The outdoor pool had just opened, but some folks were swimming anyway. Indoors, it was nice and warm. I didn%26#39;t find the staff overly friendly, but they were nice and accomodating! Our experience was pleasant and I%26#39;d return (for the view and proximity to town.)
The Gorges Grant is a little hike out of town, but it didn%26#39;t put us off, since we enjoy walking. When we were tired, we took the trolley (not too expensive, since there are only 3 of us.) We weren%26#39;t in the main building and the room was spacious and clean, if a little outdated. The staff was fabulous. On top of that, it%26#39;s so close to The Egg %26amp; I that we just had to visit there for breakfast several times. They have scrumptious food, especially the Double Blueberry Pancakes (blueberries in and out, they say!)
I%26#39;d return to either, but I loved being close to the water and Marginal Way at the Anchorage.
