We are headed up there for the weekend and it looks like rain! Any suggestions for fun grown up things to do?
Also, looking for a karaoke (SP?) bar in or near Bar Harbor.
Thanks!
what to do in the rain
If it does not rain too much, I suggest you do a sea kayaking tour. We did a sunset tour with Aquaterra Adventures last weekend while it rained a little bit and it did not bother us at all. Unlike other kayak outfitters I knew, Aquaterra provided each paddler with a hooded spray jacket which could come handy in the rain as well.
Check it out.
what to do in the rain
Get to the park...if it%26#39;s not too rainy get out and walk. If not just going around Ocean Drive and up Cadillac Mtn is beautiful. We%26#39;ve been going to Bar Harbor/Acadia for more than 20 years and some of the prettiest days were actually rainy. Jordon Pond house has indoor seating for popovers in the afternoon. There%26#39;s always shopping in Bar Harbor if you think that%26#39;s fun.
I agree, if it is not too bad get out and go around the park. Some of the best photos I have taken were in the rain or during damp conditions....

I agree with the other posters that if it%26#39;s not raining too hard, go to the park. Pack a poncho and walk the carriage trails or hike the paths. It%26#39;s still beautiful in the rain.
Otherwise, you can go take a winery or brewery tour. The Oceanarium is open, as well as the Abbe Museum. You can walk around Bar Harbor and shop. The awnings along the sidewalk will give you some coverage from the rain. You can tour St Saviour%26#39;s Church and view the original Tiffany stain glass windows. It%26#39;s breathtaking from the inside. You could spend an hour there. Depending on where you are staying, you can just relax with a good book and enjoy the view.
There are no karaoke bars in Bar Harbor. There are a couple places that have entertainment in the evenings, such as Carmen Verandah.
Don%26#39;t worry. You%26#39;ll still have a nice vacation. There are no bad days in Bar Harbor or Acadia!
First of all, it doesn%26#39;t actually rain all that much in Bar Harbor. The weekend looks like a 50 and 40% chance of rain. It probably won%26#39;t happen, although we could use some rain. Even when it does rain, it%26#39;s often just in the night with morning fog and then clearning skies for the afternoon. I think it%26#39;s all the tourists praying for a pretty day.
My plan for a rainy day would be something like this: Sleep in late, it is your vacation. Buy a newspaper at Sherman%26#39;s and go have a leisurely breakfast at Jeannie%26#39;s or Cafe This Way.
After breakfast drive to Ellsworth and then north along highway one to Schoodic Peninsula, a detached part of Acadia National Park. It%26#39;s about an hour%26#39;s drive. On the very point of the peninsula there is a bare granite outcropping that extends into the sea. If it%26#39;s pouring rain, you can still sit in the car and watch the waves come hitting high on the granite. It%26#39;s beautiful. That whole drive through the Park on Schoodic is quite nice in the rain or fog.
Stop in Winter Harbor after the park and grab some lunch at one of the two or three restaurants there.
On your way back to Bar Harbor, stop in Ellsworth and see if the L.L. Bean outlet has something interesting to buy. When you get back to the village of Bar Harbor it will be time for a coffee and a scone. Go the Opera House Internet Cafe on Cottage Street where they will have the greenhouse-type windows rolled open to the weather unless it is really cold or pouring. Choose one of the wicker tables near the front and the flower planters. Grab a Scrabble game or a puzzle, provided. Spend an hour sipping and playing and talking to each other.
Go back to your motel or B%26amp;B, now nicely cleaned by the chambermaid, and take a snooze or read the rest of the paper. Go out for a drink or two at Ruppununi%26#39;s sidewalk cafe where you can sit outside and watch your fellow tourists scury in the rain.
Go out to dinner at any of about twenty really good restaurants in Bar Harbor. Then back to the motel to sleep to the sound of gentle rain drops.
Boy, that almost makes me hope for one rain day...almost. But it%26#39;s great advice and I%26#39;m printing it for the ideas just in case!
So far I look like a prophet. After some morning cloudiness, the sun is now shining brightly in Paradise. I just saw a trailer full of kayaks and a van full of people head out the Eagle Lake Road for the quiet side of the island.
WOW--Just got back and you all were ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! First of all, it only rained yesterday, the day we were leaving. Sunday was pretty cold and cloudy but but still had a wonderful walk around the lake and ended at Jordan Pond House for Popovers and lemonade. One of the highlights of the trip -- we were cold but boy was it fun and beautiful. I%26#39;ll never let a little rain or cold in Bar Harbor stop me from having a great time, we got some beautiful pictures around the lake that captured the mist over the peaks -- GREAT GREAT GREAT TIME!!!!
