Hello all,
Well we are home and have had a wonderful trip with 3 nights in Acadia NP.
Thanks to your advice, we knew what priorities to make but didn%26#39;t get all done that we planned. You may remember that my other half uses a wheelchair. Well the airline damaged it on the way over and lent us a manual one instead of the electric one he has, so his independence was limited. We were very fortunate in Bar Harbor though. On our first morning (at 6am for the Shore path walk) we were approached by a fisherman whose friend was setting up an electric wheelchair rental business. We were his first customers and we rented a chair for $50 a day. It may be more when he gets up and running. The chair allowed us to do the Ocean path after we got it later that day. I will try to look out the number and post it in case anyone else would benefit.
That morning we went to do the Shore Path. It was a nice sunrise but unfortunately Peters wheelchair tyres stuck in the gravel path so he waited at the harborside while I walked it (and I bumped into another Brit). I will link to photos when I get them done. A wide wheeled chair would have coped easily.
We did the Ocean Path up to Thunder Hole and back again to Sand Beach. A tip to other disabled users, park in the upper car park at Sand Beach to avoid some steep (for chairs) steps to the trail. Another tip for this trail...get off it where you see gaps in the woodland as small paths lead to openings with spectacular views. Fortunately Peter can walk short distances so could benefit from these.
I had my heart set on seeing the Cobblestone Bridge but had trouble finding it. On the last morning I got up at 4.30am and went alone to Sand Beach to photograph the Beehive at the end but didn%26#39;t have time for the Great Head Trail. Anyone visiting Sand Beach, make sure you walk to the end and look left, there is a lovely view of the mountain which reflects in the water.
From there I went to Jordan Pond for photos of the Bubble Mountains in the lake. It was breezy so no reflections but it was wonderful. Unfortunately we were a week too early for the restaurant so didn%26#39;t get to taste the famous popovers. Maybe another time. The shop was open and I got some coffee though. I then found the bridge and spent some time trying to get a good shot, it was well worth it. I wish we had stayed longer but at least I did get up Mount Washington the next day which was another goal of mine.
Acadia NP is wonderful and with some research there are many places to go off the beaten track for wonderful scenery.
We're home, thanks for your help planning our trip
Thanks for posting your review. Sounds like you accomplished quite a bit despite set backs.
Glad you got to take in Mount Washington. It%26#39;s one of my favorites!
Shame on the airline! :(
