I%26#39;ve never been to Maine and would like some advice on which place to go that has great beaches, antique shops, and moderately priced restaurants. My husband and I are in our mid 30%26#39;s so we would like to stay somewhere that possibly has some entertainment nearby as well. and advice would be great.
Ogunquit vs. Kennebunkport
Hi Khaluska,
Either Kennebunkport or Ogunquit would be a good choice and have everything you%26#39;d want. The difference between the two towns is that Ogunquit is more compact, and once your car is parked, everything is within walking distance including the beach, restaurants, galleries, shops. Or you could hop a trolley if you%26#39;re loaded down with beach equipment or goodies from shopping and dont%26#39; want to haul everything back by foot.
Though Kennebunkport has a charming downtown, it is not within walking distance of the beaches, the area is more spread out, and you%26#39;d have to drive to where you want to go and fight for parking.
Both towns have great restaurants and offer some lively night spots.
But I prefer Ogunquit and have stayed there for from time to time over the years. Besides it being very walkable, it has the Marginal Way which is a lovely shoreline path that sits high above the ocean with beautiful views out to sea and quaint summer cottages. The Marginal way starts/ends at the beach and Perkins Cove and is roughly a mile. There%26#39;s lots of benches along the way in which to take a break and/or drink in the magnificent views. Perkins Cove offers several shops, galleries, and restaurants and it%26#39;s where the lobstermen or any fishing/tour boats go out of.
Nearby is Cape Neddick, another lovely area but one you do have to drive to. Very quaint and charming and not to be missed!
Not far from either Kennebunkport or Ogunquit is Wells and route 1, home to a zillion antique shops and co-ops. Just hop on the highway either north and south and you%26#39;ll see them.
Bottom line is that you couldn%26#39;t go wrong in either town! Good luck and let us know how it goes :).
