My husband %26amp; I are planning on staying in Old Orchard Beach at the end of July. We%26#39;re from New York %26amp; we have never been to Maine %26amp; are looking forward to seenig the coast, doing some whale watching %26amp; enjoying the seafood! I would appreciate any tips anyone has in regards to the whale watching tours, the area restaurants, any fun places to visit %26amp; any ';nightlife'; that we may want to take part in. Thanks!
Need activity ideasJust interested why you%26#39;ve chosen OOB. It%26#39;s more family/ amusement park oriented as opposed to whale watching and tours. In fact, in July it%26#39;s absolutely OVERRUN with kids and teens.
Need activity ideasWe%26#39;ve been wanting to visit this area for quite some time. The kids/amusement part does not bother me.
We were in OOB in 2003 but we had two small children with us. We spent the mornings at the beach and in the afternoon we took day trips around southern Maine. We spent some time shopping at the outlets in Kittery, going to LL Bean in Freeport, seeing Kennebunkport, visiting the Portland Head Light, and exploring Portland as well as Portsmouth NH.
OOB is ok especially if you have children but I might choose to stay in another town along the coast if I didnt have kids. Boothbay is nice or anywhere in the Penobscot Bay area.
OOB offers 7 miles of coastline that could be argued to be the finest stretch of beach in Maine. They offer daily whale watching tours out of Camp Ellis about 2 miles south of OOB all summer. You can also catch one out of Portland Harbor about 20 minutes north of OOB. Portland is a great day trip and might be a fun destination to plan a day around. There are a plethora of fine restaurants in the greater Portland area as well as a few good ones in and around OOB. Try The Clambake, Salty Bay or Ken%26#39;s Place in Pine Point just 2 miles north of OOB for some fine Maine seafood. Or if you want the guaranteed freshest Maine seafood, go down to the docks at the Fisherman%26#39;s Coop in Pine Point and get your seafood straight off the boat and prepare it yourself.
As far as nightlife is concerned Portland has much more to offer than OOB. The Old Port in downtown Portland is where most of the city%26#39;s nightlife is concentrated. There is something for everyone in this mile long area situated near the harbor. OOB does have some nightlife options that are good but you will find many more in the Old Port. If you like Irish pubs check out Ri-Ra, Bull Feeney%26#39;s, and The Snug in the Old Port area. OOB offers Hooligan%26#39;s Irish Pub located on the Pier. Every weekend and occasionally on weekdays in the summer both the Old Port and OOB offer live music at nearly every night spot you will encounter. Best advice is to ask around and talk to the locals to see where they like to go. Mainers are friendly and they won%26#39;t steer you the wrong way!
Thank you so much for your ideas!!
would like to add to prior responses. we have lots more night life than hooligans depending on your ages the brunswick is great for night life and accommodations, afternoon patiobar is hopping . we have another great place called goodbars music nighlty. a local favorite for food is a place called jj%26#39;s . would recommend whale watching out of camp ellis. and yes the old port would make a good day trip. one thing i would be very careful about are any accomodations abuting the train tracks, will rock you out off bed all night long.

Don%26#39;t let people sway you away from ';OOB'; - it%26#39;s a great place for any age!
We vacationed here as a newly married, childless couple, after our son was born, and are now proud to say we have lived in OOB for over 7 years!
Hi!
We are from NY also and have spent more time on the Maine coast that I can count. We usually stay in Ogunquit but were in Wells last year and are in OOB from 6/30-7/8. The best things we have done over the years as adults alone on vacation include going to Pemaquid Light House, taking the Hardy Puffin Cruise out of Old Harbor, walking along Marginal Way, eating in Perkins Cove, walking on the Wiggly Bridge in York, shopping in Kittery, Freeport %26amp; Kennebunkport, driving the coastal roads and stopping wherever for lunch....even in the rain!..... You have to plan breakfast at The Maine Diner!
So many things to do..... just plan to get out early to avoid traffic and don%26#39;t sweat it when you can%26#39;t avoid it..... you are on vacation!
