head and shoulder netting for black flies?

Since I tend to have severe reactions to various kinds of bug bites (have never had the pleasure of meeting black flies before), I%26#39;m concerned about our coming week in Maine. Where can one buy those nets? I telpehoned L L Bean, thinking that was the obvious place, but they said they don%26#39;t sell them. Help! (We%26#39;ll be arriving at the Portland airport on Saturday and driving to Colby, then touring for a week-- unless we flee/fly sooner....) thanks!

A quick search brought up this url: http://www.burfish.com/catalog/bugout.html

I wear a similar thing when I cut the lawn during black fly season. It works well. The black flies find you when you start sweating. I just heard from a friend that they were really swarming at her grandson%26#39;s baseball game this afternoon. That was in Trenton, just inland from Bar Harbor, Maine.

Thanks for reply-- but too late (alas) to catalogue order. Hoping (badly!) to learn of somewhere to buy the thing in Maine.

I bought mine at Cadillac Mountain Sports in Bar Harbor. They also have a store in Ellsworth and in Portland. A google search will bring up their locations.

bonniemaev: thank you ever so much! I%26#39;ll telephone the Portland store as soon as they open (I assume they%26#39;re not open 24/7 like L L Bean) and hope that they%26#39;ve got them in stock. I wonder how many other folks will be sporting them at the Colby commencement, but I%26#39;ll proudly wear mine. (And I still don%26#39;t understand why,if those flies are as bad as peple seem to say, the ceremony isn%26#39;t held indoors.)

Have you found anything that works especially well AFTER one is bitten? These stories of black eyes and terribly swollen eyelids etc etc are truly frightening.

Thanks very very much.

Benadryl markets an ';itch stick'; which %26lt;is%26gt; an antihistamine. Then there is an anti-itch gel (%26lt;not%26gt; an antihistamine, as far as I know) called Rhuli or Rhuli-gel that works pretty well.

My guess is that you will find the net hats in any local hardware store in Maine. Ditto on the itch stick. It works very well and is so easy and direct to apply. Also, a can of Deep Woods Off works pretty well to repel the little delights. If you don%26#39;t have the netting, wear a hat. They like to get in your scalp. Nice tender skin. Also, don%26#39;t wear perfumes, hair spray, etc. I think the smells attract them.

Rhuli etc etc has never worked for me. Sigh. I';m glad you mentioned hardware store possibility since I just learned that the Cadillac Sports Co no longer has stores in Portland. Also: If perfumes etc are a no-no, I wonder why Bounce fabric softener sheets might work??

Good question about Bounce. I don%26#39;t know. But I would guess that it is the particular odor that either attracts or repels. I forget how the Bounce sheets are supposed to work. Do you wear them? Another product that has always been touted is Avon Skin So Soft. I never liked it much. I think you thin it down and can spread it or put it in a spray bottle. It%26#39;s nice for little kids because it doesn;t have the caustic chemicals in traditional bug repellents.

The only guaranteed way of beating those hideous black flies is to buy a Bug Baffler shirt direct from the manufacturer. They are made in southern NH and can be found by doing a search for bug baffler. I tried the netted hats and they are not nearly as effective.
