cruises in the bay

I just read about going on a lobster boat--lucky catch? Is this worthwhile or very touristy?

We are planning to do the mail run boat tour. We will be there the end of May after Memorial Day--do I need to buy our tickets for these in advance or can we wait until we arrive. We will be in Portland for three days.

Touristy? Well, you%26#39;ll be a tourist, won%26#39;t you? :-)

While I don%26#39;t have first-hand experience with these guys, it seems pretty worthwhile for someone who might be interested in how the lobsters are caught. I checked out their website, and $22 for an hour and a half cruise around the harbor seems like a good deal!

By the ';mail run boat tour';, I assume you mean a Casco Bay Lines%26#39; ferry ride. No, you never need tickets ahead of time. Their main business is ferrying islanders and freight back and forth. The tourists on the boat are just a little extra.

Thanks for the info--didn%26#39;t mean to offend with the word ';touristy';. We just didn%26#39;t want to get caught up in a situation where we aren%26#39;t learning about lobster hauling--which we want to do--but instead being ';entertained'; by someone. We have traveled a great deal in our country and we always enjoy talking with the locals and learning about the area. If we want entertainment, we will go to a club or amusement park! Hope you understand what I am trying to say.

jbj,

Personally, unless you%26#39;re really interested in how lobsters are caught, I%26#39;d pass on this one. No offense to the hardworking lobstermen/women, but there are better ways to spend time on the bay. (We had my son%26#39;s 6th birthday on a lobster boat. It was a challenge holding the attention of ten little boys for an hour. Enough said.)

Regarding the ';mail boat run'; on Casco Bay Lines, beware, it%26#39;s one of their longest excursions. Even if it%26#39;s a beautiful day in Portland, count on it being a good 10-15 degrees cooler on the Bay--especially in late May. There are shorter round trips that will provide the same scenic beauty--without turning your lips blue.

There are also a number of sunset sail opportunties--which is really a treat! Check out:

Have fun!
