camping on mount desert island

Hello, been reading up on camping and campgrounds on MDI. We are planning a trip end of July and are looking for a centrally located campgroung. We want to hike/bike our way in Acadia National park. We have an 1985 westfalia and minimally need showers....

Any suggestions? Seems Blackwood campground has ';showers nearby';...what does that mean?

Exactly that. The showers are in Otter Creek, maybe a mile from Blackwoods at a commercial enterprise.

For biking in Acadia, Blackwoods is your best bet, I believe. You have easy access to the Loop Road and from that, you can access the carriage road system.

Blackwoods is a by-reservation-only campground and is very popular, so you might want to start on that now.

Thanks for the ino. What about Somes sound and the MDI campground? Too far away? Or easy acces to bike/hike trails. We have been camping for more than 10 years and not having a shower clser by ';bugs'; me, and my 10%26amp;8 year olds.. I just want to be centrally located BUT have acces to showers!

I should have been more complete in my answer.

If you want to take off from your campsite on your bikes and get to the park roads, then Blackwoods is probably the best.

If you are willing to haul your bikes to a good carriage road access, e.g., Eagle Lake, Duck Brook, or Jordan Pond, then a place like MDI would be fine. It is a good location---about 10 minutes by car from the Eagle Lake access, the Cadillac Mountain park entrance, and Bar Harbor. It%26#39;s about the same to Southwest Harbor. Never having camped on the island, I really can%26#39;t tell you much about any of the campgrounds. MDI Campground is popular and the campsites are far enough from the road to offer relative quiet.

What I recommend that you avoid is riding on the highways as much as possible. July is a heavy traffic month, our roads are narrow, and the shoulders (where they exist) can be rough and treacherous.

Thanks for the reply.

We are looking for something where we can just take off on foot/bike but this showers nearby really annoyes me...never been to a national/state park without this minimum convienience!

We%26#39;ll look into it.

If anyone can give me an idea of where to camp in Blackwood (A or B loop) to be closest to these nearby showers/can we get there easily on foot/bike....

Thanks again.

The B loop is closest to the road (and showers); The A loop is closest to the Loop Road. The way that the access road to the campgrounds is laid out, in terms of getting to the highway and showers, it%26#39;s about a quarter-mile difference.

We will probably opt for a campground with accessable showers.

Any suggestions in that departement? Closer to the carrige road?

All in all, I think that MDI Campground may be your best bet. There are no campgrounds of which I%26#39;m aware that are really close, i.e., adjacent, to the carriage road system.

If from MDI campground you would bike south along Rte 3 (less travelled than it is farther north, around Bar Harbor), you could access the carriage road system via the Parkman Mountain or Brown Mountain parking lots.

In preparation for your visit, I suggest that you obtain a copy of the MapAdventures LLC map to Acadia:

%26lt;www.mapadventures.com%26gt;

It is the most up-to-date map for the area and clearly shows all of the carriage roads and hiking trails.
