Black flies in Acadia during the Memorial Day Weekend

We are planning for a trip to Acadia during the Memorial Day weekend (May 26-28). I know the travel season will not fully begin by then, but that%26#39;s possibly the only time we can go there this year. My question is .. will it be a good time weather-wise? And more importantly, will we be annoyed by those black flies that we won%26#39;t have fun? We are not doing any camping though, but may be some hiking, biking, and sea kayaking..

Thanks in advance..

I was there last Memorial Day weekend and will be returning for Memorial Day weekend again this year. We had beautiful weather last year - 60s during the day with a mix of sun and clouds as I recall. Nights are still chilly!

No negative encounters with the black flies last year that I recall- I hate those little buggers too. I think it%26#39;s still a little early for them and the sea breeze does help keep bugs away as well.

Personally, I think you%26#39;ve chosen a great time of year to go to Acadia and Bar Harbor!!!

Enjoy your trip!

Undoubtedly they will have hatched or be hatching at that time. With this screwy spring we%26#39;ve had, it%26#39;s difficult to estimate a peak time for them

You won%26#39;t be bothered by them when you are sea kayaking. As for hiking and biking, the trick is to avoid the trails and carriage roads in low, wet areas, i.e., along streams. For example, the Seven Bridges carriage road that runs to Aunt Betty%26#39;s Pond can get pretty bad. Generally, you won%26#39;t find many blackflies in open forested areas or anywhere where the breeze is blowing.

Another trick to dealing with the black flies is to make sure that you have bug repelant on. Everyone has the brand that works the best for them, just make sure you use it for days in the park, mainly when you are hiking. Have a great visit to Bar Harbor.
